I plan to replace the elevator spar pivot with something stronger. An alum tube fit into a small brass tube seems too weak for today’s requirements. I’m going to use a titanium rod and needle bearings.

Hey Guys, This is Iron Mike, (Mikes68charger) or just Army Mike LOL,

This Byron has been around the block for sure, I bought it 4 years ago from Balsa Dynamic in IA, then sold it to a guy in Chicago, after my buddy convinced me to stop wasting my time on non original Turbine Jets, and then it got sold to the thread starter on this thread (frankle951), and during my efforts to find another it was able to work out a deal for my old Byron F15 to come back home.

After going to the Big Bird Iowa show this year I had to get another Byron F15. As this show is my favorite as its the only RC jet / RC Warbird / Full Scale show / Concerts every night / with amazing awards where the full scale pilots pick the award winners, and getting to fly at the original Byron field in the YouTube clips. So I wanted to get a Byron Jet to fly at the Byron Field next year.

I will be doing so more updating, adding strength around the original spar in the foam, fiberglass the wings, rudders, and elevators, fix rudder servo mounting, and repaint.

I will post pictures along my way

I had one of the first Byron F-16s with retracts back in the day.(Before Byron did it) I had the pipe up in the fuse out of the airflow to clean it up. Mine was Radar gunned at a tick under 130 mph.

I haven't heard too much about whether people updating these F15's are keeping the original landing gear. Anyone? I see parts are made of a fiber filled plastic. I wonder if they are strong enough. Also, the mains are sitting on a block that is side-mounted (cantilevered). Seems it could break. Anyone have experience using the same gears?

I had the same question about Gear in Post #45. It would be a major re-do to go to modern retracts I think.

I think, assuming the plastic strut is ok, that adding an inboard support to the existing gear would eliminate a primary weakness. Then the cantilevered aspect would be dealt with.

So this is what I came up with for rear retract mounts, the bracket that holds the retract is 2 layers of 1/4 in ply, with one side missing to tie into the stock retract block, you can see the thinner (what ever 1/2 of 1/4 in ply) peaces strengthening the stock block, the base for retract actually sits at an angle to slightly push the gear a little wider, the inside support glues at an angle with the already secured ply, with a 2nd cap layer to help tie it all in. (So one peace the 2x1/4 in play sits on, the other glues to this play on end)

In my testing this is way stronger than stock and I know this jet has flown with K140 with stock plastic gear.

The 1/2 in robart gear should be strong enough as I have a buddy with twin 120mm edf running same gear and we will be around the same weight

Ok so spare time, I didn't want to mess with stock bolts, but they stick out almost a 1/4 in attached to the stock 1/8 wing former. This former gets some of its strengths from the 2 hard plastic fan shrouds.

So I got a nice straight 1.5in x 1/4 in ply to firmly press over the current nuts and bolt threads, (cut to proper length. Then added black only JB Weld to bolt tips to mark plywood) This 1/4 in peace of ply. Along with 2 coustom former supports are glued to orginal former to give it alot more strength and more contact area on the side of the fuse.

This is the stock Byron elevator support, I made a 1/8 former, I did drill 2 big lightning holes, this peace of ply boxes off the one side of wood for inside attachment, this also has glue to all there sides of fuse in this area providing a lot of strength.

I know some worry about such small elevator tubes, but as these tubes are nothing more than a pivot vs most others where this tube is a pivot and provides rotation forces. Using the stock Byron elevator servo arm for movement gives it 2 points of support,

I do got a sold peace of carbonfiber on order to fit in current elevator rod, I did this on my Byron F16 I converted with JetCat P120SX and never had issues

So this is how it sits now, the Merlin 160 has to be mounted as far foward as possible to get closer to CG and correct turbine to bell mouth location.

I built round formers to go inside exsaust to hold pipe and glue to little elevator supports from earlier, these have as many holes as possible to let air out of fuse and keep tail weight down.

I cut out 6oz of dead unusefull weight out what was there, but added, 4.5oz back lol

Added 2 1/4in stringers with lighting holes to tie the motor mount set up to both formers, added the rest of wight with a strip of 5oz glass and resin from the front and rear former, this strengthens the floor, but more importantly the fuse had several stress cracks on the bottom curved part of fuse, I believe this damage is transport damage not important for flight, but needed fix on inside so I can repair the out side of fuse.

I had to buy a can of polyester resin, I forgot how much smells

The round hard wood dowel is sunk into the balsa all the way to the bottom skin. Not very good looking, but strong enough to mount Y pipe

So now not my favorite part, thrust tube setting, most manual says 25-30mm from inside pipe, some manual say line end of bellmouth with end of pipe. I see a lot of pictures like how I have it set up.

I have to flatten the top of the mouth as it will touch the top skin.

I'm concerned about pipe also. there is a pretty big cavity before the split
