A heat gun might have that stuff coming off in very large pieces, with a bunch less work and less mess.... and maybe less intrusive on the base it's on. Just a suggestion.

Not sure if you've tried a heat-gun to loosen that covering... That works well, but sometimes leaves more pigment on the wood, still removable depending on the color and quality of the original...
