Default Finally finished 22 June 2020

Started this project in November 2019. Limited time to work on it then COVID hit the US like a ton of bricks. Between that and an increased commitment to get this plane built, I started putting more time into it around late March. I’m glad to report it’s pretty much done. My first jet. Man, it’s a tight fit getting everything into the area forward of the tank but I managed it. Lots of planning time.

Looking forward to getting it in the air.

Equipment summary for those interested
Spektrum AR9030T RX and DX9 TX
ACEX-80 engine (CRX / Swiwin)
Hanson 4 ounce UAT
Hitec digital servos throughout
Electrodynamics heavy duty servo extensions throughout
Jet Central gear failsafe
Jet Tronics proportional brake valve
Duralite Flight Systems 2S2P 7000 mah radio battery with “stay balance” circuit
PowerBox switch/regulator for radio
Pulse 3300 mah lipo ECU battery

Needs official decals!

Decided to run separate air tanks. One for brakes. One for gear.

Thanks for the Kudos! It's been a challenging project to be sure but it's done. I am lucky to have several well experienced jet pilots in my club who have been really helpful. That made a huge difference in not having to re-work a lot of stuff on this - my first jet project.

Ok then, I'm all set with the building board and have almost everything I will need.

I think the P60 is perfect to this jet, I flew one like this one at the Clovis jet meet, that one had a K70, way too much thrust for this little airplane, It's going to be lots of fun to build, maiden, then fly it some more, I got my own P60 and would like to have my own Xcalibur, maybe later

Here are the parts for the build, servos, extensions, turbine, air system, including airlines, landing gear, Prolink struts, wheels and brakes.

First thing to do will be to stretch the monokote.

I've same model, +200 flights with Wren 80, no problems at all and fast enough and any acro is possible. Tarmac rwy in my case but I'm sure no probs from the grass too with an 80N and maybe with 60N too if you have enough space of course.

I'm also pretty sure no problems with a 60N, maybe slighly longer take off roll but after that it will fly beautifully. In flight Xcalibur if very clean and efficient, to be a twin tal boom jet. I also think to remember that when Dave Wilshere started to fly and test it few years ago, he had the chance to fly it with a 60N with no problems.

You will have a nice flying Xcalibur and lot of fun.

Enjoy the building and the model!

Thank you for the info Denis, our runways are made of Petromat and some are pavement, no grass, should do fine.

Tks.

Do you have any suggestions on the build, anything that should be change or fix?

Tks.

Close to 300 flts on mine, the main thing I would recommend is to ditch the air retracts and go with a good set of electric gear. Since your running the 60 size turbine, you may also want to consider using a smaller tank. The 2.7L tank they sell is great, but oversized, especially for a smaller engine. I use a 2L tank with my K85 and generally land with close to half a tank of fuel remaining. Otherwise, it's a great jet as is.

See posts # 2347 - #2348 regarding a little loc-tite on the wheel assemblies

There is a lot of good information in this thread if you find any problems with your assembly, most snags have been covered wit appropriate fixes

The prototype was flown with a P-60 and a friend flew his with a P-60 for several years, mainly from grass. The smaller turbine needs full beans longer, so the 2.9ltr stock tank is perfect for 8 minute flights. The weight saving of a smaller tank is not worth it. Build light, ignore the extra rubbish people fit.
Assemble the model before you start the build. The wing spar is a snug fit, chamfer the end to lead it into the nylon clamps and don’t be frightened of a good smack on the tip to get it seated.
Like AP said strip and reassemble the gear, air is lighter than electric and my old Xcalibur still holds air after 7 years and hundreds of flights.
The hinges are easier to install if you drill through the hinge socket backs with a 1/16” drill to remove the air pocket.

All the answers are in this thread 🙂

JP I totally agree about using locktight on the gear, just the other day my Boomer did a hard landing, at home, before putting away, I flipped it over to check the gear, it has prolink on the mains, I found a screw on each one on the way out, I set them back in with a little drop of blue locktight.

I've been trying to read the entire thread but haven't been able too, maybe tonight, I know there is good info on it and I want to read it, I'm sure it will save me building time.

Dave, as usually, your help is much appreciated, thank you for all the construction tips.

Like you, I prefer air retracts, that's all I've done on all my jets and know what to look for when been installed, I was calculating that the 2.9L tank was going to give me about 8 min of flight time, that's what I was looking for, 5 min is just not sufficient flight time for me, the 2.9L tank is perfect.

"Ignore the extra rubbish people fit" LOL! will do, I want this build to be simple and light.

Thank you.

For some reason unknown to me I end up BBQing during all my builds, the Reaction 54, the Turbinator and so on, the Xcalibur build is no different, as I'm getting ready for the build I get the BBQ going, coincidence, I think not

Can't go flying, way too hot in the afternoons, may as well build let the Tequila flow X 2

Per Dave's recommendations, I put the jet together, all looks good and aligned.

Time to stretch the monokote.

Now check there is no ‘bruising’ under the tail behind the fin sockets. I think I see light, but if the wood shows a mark, the back of the tail will be sitting with UP set in. Trim the fin notch to suit. You need to fit all the screws-double checks the threads too!

I agree with Dave regarding the air retracts. I've had mine since Global Jet Club got them in stock, have worn out one JetCat P-70 (80+ hours!) and now have a 2nd P-70 in it, with well over 400 flights and have not had any issues with the gear at all except for one item to watch for. On mine, the pin that holds the trailing link part of the gear works it way to one side or the other no matter how tight I try to get the set screw, but other than that, no problems.

Russ, that's the same screw I found on its way out on my Boomer's prolink, must be where all the vibration from the landings concentrates.

Been reading the thread, I'm around post 200.

Dave, I remember reading a long time ago about the step on the V stabs, I will check that and the screw sockets.

Work on the Xcalibur has started early today.

Dave, check the pics please, it looks to me that the alignments are good, now I get the tap on the wing tip to get the spar to seat all the way in, a fix for that will be to get longer screws, if they are too long then cut them just a tad longer than the original ones, the original screws will do for now, all screw's threads are good.

I also checked the wing incident, wings 0°, stab -2°.

Tks.

I would trim. 1/16” off the fin rear notch to ensure clearance
