So, I figured you could pretty much plug and play with any generic servo with an RC boat. The servo for my recoil 26 got water in it and died so I got the S605 spektrum servo that was recommended but the servo actually turns too far forward and not enough backwards laying sideways so do I have to buy a specific servo that will work laying sideways or do I have to modify the servo somehow?

You need to remove the servo horn and re-center it after you install the servo. Than adjust your endpoints for the servo.
