I haven't been able to see one in person so maybe it is the issue, but perhaps there are ways to creatively add inlet air.
Schubeler likes to add NACA ducts, etc.
Usually the exit size is too...

Would it be possible for someone to snap a pic of the exhaust opening at the rear of the fuselage with a ruler showing the width?
I was wondering about EDFpossibillities.
